1. |
Please
write down the names of your
family members in English letters
and help them pronounce them.
Tell them how they should address
you: "Mr. First name"
or 'surname". |
2. |
Show
them which bathroom to use and
explain anything tricky about
working the faucets, shower
or toilet. |
3. |
Please
provide closet space and hangers
so he/she may hang up clothes
in his/her room. |
4. |
If
available, please provide a
mirror in his/her bedroom. A
small one is fine. |
5. |
If
possible put a hair dryer (and
it's OK if you don't), can he/she
borrow it? |
6. |
Soon
after they arrive, please discuss
plans for the rest of the day
and what clothing is appropriate. |
7. |
Before
going to bed, discuss plans
for the next day-including what
time to get up, what time breakfast
will be served, what the weather
will be like, and what he/she
should wear. |
8. |
Please
ask about his/her preferences
for breakfast food. |
9. |
For
lunches and dinners, please
don't feel that you have to
make something fancy. They would
very much like to try your family's
favorite dishes or specialties. |
10. |
Ask
in advance their previous hosts/
district, they may have a record
sheet that keeps track of what
he/she has eaten recently. It
may also tell you if he/she
have discovered some foods that
he/she don't like. |
11. |
As
he/she will almost certainly
need to do laundry during his/her
stay with you, please show him/her
how to use the washer and dryer. |
12. |
He/she
may also have an item or two
that will need to be dry-cleaned.
He/she will be happy to pay
for this. Please help them to
get the clothes to the dry cleaner? |
13. |
At
some point during his/her stay
with you, he/she may need to
contact one of his/her fellow
team members at his/her host
family's house. Would you please
show him/her how to use your
phone for local calls. Also,
if he/she would like to call
his/her family back home. |
14. |
Please
help him/her with their calling
card so you don't get charged
for the call. |
15. |
If
available and convenient, please
show him/her how to access the
Internet from your home. They
would love to check their emails. |
16. |
Please
let them know if it is OK to
drink Pot water. Otherwise,
it would be appreciated if you
could keep some cold bottled
water or soda available to re-hydrate
after a long day. |
17. |
Please
structure activities so that
they can get to bed by 10:00
pm. |
18. |
If
available, please show them
how to access English-language
CNN or BBC news on your television.
Also, if English-language newspapers
were available, it would be
very interested in getting one. |
19. |
GSE
team members will try their
best with Hindi, but please
try your English too! Your English
will almost certainly be better
than their Hindi. Don't worry
at all about making mistakes.
They will be flattered by and
grateful for your efforts. It
will help both of you to know
each other better and really
help break the ice! |
20. |
Most
important: Please relax, be
ourselves, and have fun. That's
what they want to do too. |
